SimTec participated in the project USA-032 “Environment-Friendly Refining /deNOx Processes utilizing Innovative Nano-structured Micro/Mesoporous Catalytic Materials”. The objective of the study was to employ advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to simulate the overall deNOx process in a Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) regenerator in order to assess existing catalytic data and predict the overall performance of catalytic systems under fluidised bed conditions. a decrease in the total emitted NOx levels is of primary concern for the environmentally friendly operation of the FCC unit.

Numerical simulations of the dense, reacting, gas–solid flow in the FCC regenerator and the subsequent gas phase deNOx process in the SCR unit are performed using the commercial CFD code FLUENT. The mentioned CFD model constituted the first successful simulation of an FCC regenerator employing multiphase CFD flow modelling coupled with detailed gas phase chemistry.
